My tryst with Ilayaraja - 3

I will conclude this with few tit bits. :-)

When I met Ilayaraja for the first time, I sincerely shook his hands like a gentleman. Later I observed that everyone wishes him either by a 'Namaste' or by touching his feet. During the audio release when I went onto the stage, I tried to touch his feet but he immediately held my shoulder and with a huge smile shook my hand.

Sometimes a song has to tell a story or move the story forward. From a basic tune to picturization to final cut of a song so many people, elements join their forces to realize a directors vision. In that essence, the tune and music composition of "Chinni Polike ledu" envisioned everything. That song was a step ahead of me. Also, the initial English/telugu line composition of Nenunenugaa was totally by Ilayaraja himself.

It goes like this,

I follow you
Ramachilukaa
You cant find me
Neekutelusaa

Even that part was ahead of me and envisioned everything. I realized the genius of these lines and the jazz in "Chinni polike", only well after finishing the shooting. All I can do is profoundly thank him. :-)

What u did is correct...shake hands ...coz i guess ilayaraja likes ppl to be more frenly and novel with him...anyway that way we also can comfortably ask him anything ...he also feels more interesting..if everyone is stiff with him then IR misses the fun..i saw in audio function all the senior directors are stiff and panic stuck with respect while talking abt him...if that is the case then discussions will go stiff also and not good for business...take it easy is good for us and IR also..:)

  2. Yeah Hifi music like jazz in CHINNA POLIKE "needs to reach" people...for u shooting helped in that...for todays busy ppl how ? i think for audience maybe extreme closeup expressions will make it reach...i dont know..."may be" :)

Double eager to watch your film "Om Shanthi", as I got connected to
your words "A filmmaker by desire. A filmmaker by choice. A filmmaker
by accident." , would like to know what exactly you mean by the same.
Something to catch between the lines? :)

  4. Kiran: I agree with you. :-) Well, when a song makes sense, it usually reaches people. However limited might it be, a maker is always happy when it reaches out and connects.

Hari: You have a fun blog there. :-) Just thought of clearing the air. Will do a post sometime about desire and chance.

  6. Nice to read about IR. In recent times some of his songs have not done that well. However, I am still very bullish on the background score. So, I hope that he can really help elevate your movie by his background score.

By the way, if you are keen on finding TONS of places in Europe...you should check my photos ..may be it will give you some ideas for some overseas shots -:) My two year stay in Europe was put to good use -:)

  9. Hello Sir,

Again, thank you so much for the mere narration about song composing session & also, you have brought out more of contemporary musical elements from Raaja sir's music factory. "Chinni Polike ledu" is such a lovely composition. I wish you all success for this movie & future ventures.

BTW, again kindly confirm whether the music comes in trailer was composed Raaja sir itself?

  14. Kenny : Welcome. :-) May be the publicity guys should stop lifting track so blatantly especially from well known artists ;-)

Rakhi: Yeah, the songs in Om Shanti are more 'Contextual' than 'Popular'. They make more sense with in the movie than as isolated units.
Checked your blog. Nice article on Raja.
Btw, I too am a fan of Crichton, Carl Sagan and Archer. :-)
